Landing in Hawaii was a sight for sore eyes. All of us were ready for a bit of a taste of North America, after being in foreign-speaking countries for the last seven months or so. The kids were most excited to see street signs in English and to be able to read food labels. It’s funny the things you miss when you’re away from home. I missed being able to track down coffee creamer easily, and we all missed a good old-fashioned cheeseburger and fries.

Leaving Tahiti was bittersweet and a little bit of an adventure. As is always the case, when it’s time to go, the wind picks up just to make things more difficult. In this specific anchorage, you cross an airport zone, where you need to ask for permission to cross the airfield. Of course when we called, they asked us to hold tight for a minute and we were trying to maintain our position in the sudden gust of wind. Once they said it was time to go again, we had by that time done a loop. As we...

Tahiti ended up being a really nice stop for us all. It’s definitely the biggest city we’ve come across in a long time and we weren’t disappointed. We really thought it might have tacky tourist feel but it really maintained the chill Polynesian vibes we’ve come to love.

After arriving to our first Tuamotu of Raroia, we got into the swing of things. We were so grateful to have a calm, protected anchorage, and to always be looking out at that clear turquoise water. Our confidence of swimming with sharks was also going up, as they were an everyday sighting.

Arriving in French Polynesia after three weeks at sea felt like such an accomplishment. We tucked into the bay at Hiva Oa and there was enough room for us to stern tie near the beach. It was so nice to celebrate a little bit and tidy up and then have a good rest. The next few days consisted of us putting the boat back in order , walking, back-and-forth to town, checking into the country and getting all sorts of other ducks in a row.

And just like that, we’ve made it! After three weeks at sea in the open ocean, we’ve cited land in French Polynesia! We’ve had a few ups and downs (pardon the pun), but overall this has been a really successful passage. We’ve certainly heard of people having smoother passages, but we’ve heard of a lot worse as well. We’re sliding ourselves somewhere directly in the middle.

So, we have officially checked out of the country of Mexico! We have been here for nearly 4 months and man, have we seen and learned a lot. We are really grateful that the checkout process went smoothly and now it’s time to keep moving on.

We were lucky to be able to spend almost 2 weeks tucked into a bay with good friends on family boat called Nike. It was such a sweet season of doing life together every day, and we got into a rhythm of daily tasks in the morning, often followed by an afternoon snorkel, and then finishing the day off with dinner together. It was great to be able to share so many meals, and memories together, especially for the kids to have some friends around, and especially some teenager time.

After spending a good long while in La Paz, and sending my mom off back to Canada, it felt time to go and do some more exploring. As we were watching the weather, we could see that some strong wind was coming in and we wanted to make sure we were in a safe place to ride that out. A friend had mentioned that there was another Canadian boat with two teen boys that was in the area and she encouraged us to connect with them, so we did. They were in a great spot to ride out the wind so we started to...

We started our track early to Cabo with a nice amount of wind, and we were even able to make a batch of cinnamon buns while underway. We had some nice buddy boats along for the ride, and we could keep an eye on each other as we all head towards Cabo.
